Cathédrale de la Major

Built on the ruins of the Temple of Diana, Cathédrale de la Major was one of the largest cathedrals built in Europe during the 19th century. Mosaic floors and red and white marble banners adorn the interior, and domes and cupolas are designed in a style similar to that found in Istanbul. The cathedral is closed on Mondays, and admission is free.

Basilique Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde

Basilique Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde is a 19th century church that sits atop a limestone rock overlooking the southern side of the Vieux-Port. It was designed in the Romanesque-Byzantine style, and topped with a 30 foot gilded statue of the Virgin Mary. The view here is impressive, particularily at sunset, and visitors can see the city, islands, and the sea.
