The oldest city in France and the second largest behind Paris, Marseille blends its rich and dynamic history with a fresh contemporary atmosphere. The vibrant outdoor markets, lively bistros, and nightclubs of the Vieux Port attract locals and visitors to this port city in droves. Museums abound, with a unique mixture of historic archives and modern art. The Basilique Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde is one of the oldest churches in Europe and visitors can take in the spectacular views of the city from this revered shrine. In addition, the city is home to a variety of outdoor parks, including the Parc Longchamp and Parc Borely, each with their own charms. Bustling squares can be found throughout Marseille, including Place de Lenche, which overlooks the picturesque harbour and is brimming with quaint boutiques and local art. The city is also home to Monument aux Morts de l'Armée d'Orient, an arc du triomph located up the hill from the city, offering splendid views of Iles de Frioul. Marseille is the birthplace of bouillabaisse, and as such the majority of restaurants serve their own version of this regional specialty.
