Chapelle Penitents-gris (Chapelle des Bourras)

Cathédrale de la Major
+ My Favorites
Built on the ruins of the Temple of Diana, Cathédrale de la Major was one of the largest cathedrals built in Europe during the 19th century. Mosaic floors and red and white marble banners adorn the interior, and domes and cupolas are designed in a style similar to that found in Istanbul. The cathedral is closed on Mondays, and admission is free.

Eglise de la Madeleine
+ My Favorites
Eglise de la Madeleine originally was constructed outside the city walls in the 13th century, and it was once a monastery. The interior of the church features some important pieces of art, such as the statue placed on the altar of Notre-dame des Grâces, and the retable of the Annunciation which dates from 1443. Stained glass windows, paintings, and hangings are also located throughout the church.

Basilique Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde
+ My Favorites
Basilique Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde is a 19th century church that sits atop a limestone rock overlooking the southern side of the Vieux-Port. It was designed in the Romanesque-Byzantine style, and topped with a 30 foot gilded statue of the Virgin Mary. The view here is impressive, particularily at sunset, and visitors can see the city, islands, and the sea.

Basilique St-Victor
+ My Favorites
The Basilique St-Victor is one of few ancient structures in Marseille. It is a semi-fortified basilica that was built above a 5th century crypt. The church and abbey were founded by St. Cassianus, and visitors can view the crypt, which features work done in the 10th and 11th centuries.
